Tom’s complicated army enrolment

Stories within stories that may not agree with ‘General Knowledge.’

Above is Tom Bowen’s AMF enrolment form from August 1940, with nice cursive text filling out the whole form. Except for the signature. There are some stories within stories here. The addresses on the form, Belgrave and Mount Dandenong, tell a story that contrasts widely with ‘general knowledge,’ about Tom. The Change of Address stamp at the top is interesting too.

As I point out in The Book (it’s really fun being able to quote yourself), Tom had a complicated involvement with the Army. Extremely complicated. We’re talking about misplaced documents, demands for discharge papers, responses that he wasn’t eligible for them as he didn’t serve…when it seems he must have, and other little miseries, I mean, mysteries. The actual length of time he was enlisted, or not, is also interesting. Or not.

But guess what; I have my own little conclusions here and there. Of course, they don’t necessarily agree with ‘general knowledge.’

More later.
